About this course

Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms: the bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa that are invisible to the naked eye but that shape life on Earth in fundamental ways. Microorganisms drive the cycling of elements through ecosystems, underpin human health and disease, produce the fermented foods and beverages we consume, and hold enormous potential for biotechnology and medicine. Understanding how they function, how they reproduce, how they cause infection, and how they can be harnessed or controlled is one of the most productive and consequential areas of modern biological science.

At Aberdeen this five-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the principles of microbiology, covering the biology of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, the mechanisms of infection and immunity, the molecular tools used to study them, and their applications in industry, medicine, and environmental science. You will develop both theoretical understanding and laboratory competence, building the practical skills that employers in the biological sciences consistently value. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study microbiology in an international research environment and broaden your perspective on the field.

An industrial placement is a significant structural feature of the degree, placing you in a professional scientific environment for a sustained period before you graduate. This experience is invaluable for understanding how microbiology research and practice translate into industrial and commercial settings, and for building the professional network and portfolio that support your transition into the workforce.

Graduates move into careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical microbiology, public health laboratories, food science, environmental microbiology, and academic research. Many go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in microbiology, infectious disease, or related fields, which opens doors to senior research and clinical scientist roles.

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost…

Good but not perfect
Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the …
