Midwifery

Midwifery is a distinct clinical profession centred on supporting women and their families through pregnancy, labour, birth, and the weeks that follow. Midwives hold specialist expertise that is separate from nursing, and they take the lead in providing care for women experiencing straightforward pregnancies while working closely with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals when complications arise. The role is both clinical and relational, requiring precise medical judgement alongside sustained compassionate presence at some of the most significant moments in a family's life.

At the University of Lincoln, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a midwife. You will study the anatomy and physiology of reproduction and childbirth, normal and complex pregnancy pathways, pharmacology, neonatal care, and the safeguarding frameworks that protect mothers and babies. Alongside this clinical knowledge you will develop skills in communication, ethical decision-making, and working within multidisciplinary teams.

Clinical placements are central to the programme, placing you in hospitals, birth centres, and community settings where you will gain hands-on experience across the full spectrum of antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care. These placements build the competence and confidence that registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council requires.

This programme leads to professional registration as a midwife, enabling you to practise across NHS and independent settings including hospital labour wards, alongside community midwifery teams, in birth centres, and in home birth services. With experience, midwives can move into specialist roles such as infant feeding coordination, safeguarding, research, and education. Some graduates also progress to advanced practice, consultant midwifery, or academic careers, and the degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in public health, midwifery research, and leadership.
