Military History

Military history is the study of armed conflict in its broadest sense, encompassing not just battles and campaigns but the political, social, economic, and technological forces that drive nations to war, shape how wars are fought, and determine what happens in their aftermath. It asks why conflicts begin, how they unfold, how they end, and what mark they leave on societies, states, and ideologies. It draws on political history, sociology, technology studies, and cultural history to produce some of the richest and most consequential historical scholarship, covering everything from the ancient world to the present day.

At the University of Kent this part-time programme allows you to explore how conflict has shaped nations, societies, and ideology throughout history in a way that fits around other commitments. You will examine what drives nations to go to war and what motivates individuals to fight, and you will consider how technology and propaganda have transformed not only the conduct of warfare but the societies that wage it. The programme engages with military history across different periods and geographies, developing your analytical skills and your ability to work with a range of historical sources and arguments.

Military history graduates move into careers across a range of fields. Teaching, at school and higher education level, is a common path, and the subject is a recognised and valued part of history curricula in the UK. Defence and security organisations, think tanks, heritage and commemorative institutions, museums, archives, journalism, and publishing are other directions.

The analytical, research, and communication skills developed through historical study are valued in the civil service, the armed forces themselves, and a wide range of roles that require careful, evidence-based thinking about complex events. Postgraduate study in military history, strategic studies, or war studies is also a well-trodden path for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
