About this course

Modern languages and linguistics at the University of Leeds brings together the practical development of language skills with the systematic scientific study of how language works. Learning a language at degree level means developing genuine communicative proficiency, reading literature in the original, and understanding the cultures and histories of the communities where the language is spoken. Linguistics asks what all languages have in common, how they differ, how they change over time, and what the study of language reveals about the human mind and social life.

This four-year full-time degree allows you to study your chosen language from beginners' level or with prior knowledge, developing your spoken and written skills through language-intensive learning. Leeds offers a range of language options, and the linguistic strand develops your understanding of phonology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement activity, giving you professional experience in a context where your languages and analytical skills are directly applied, and a year abroad that deepens your language proficiency and cultural understanding through immersion.

The combination of placement experience, year abroad, and linguistic training makes this degree a particularly thorough preparation for both professional language use and the study of language as a scientific discipline.

Graduates go on to careers in translation, interpreting, teaching, language services, journalism, international business, diplomacy, publishing, the civil service, and organisations working in international development. The linguistics component also prepares you for roles in language technology, speech and language therapy (with further training), language policy, and applied linguistic research. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, translation studies, or language education.

Leeds's strong language research environment and its extensive connections with international partner universities give the programme real depth.

Highly recommend
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the ci…

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links ma…
