About this course

Interpreting and translating are among the most technically demanding applications of language skill, requiring not only fluency in two or more languages but the ability to switch between them rapidly and accurately under pressure, and to convey meaning precisely across linguistic and cultural contexts. Interpreting involves the real-time processing and transfer of spoken communication, in conference, courtroom, diplomatic, and medical settings among others. Translation involves the careful, considered rendering of written texts from one language to another, preserving meaning, tone, and register while adapting to the conventions of the target language.

At Heriot-Watt University this four-year full-time programme develops French and Spanish to degree level with a specific focus on applied modern languages for professional interpreting and translating use. You will develop advanced language skills in both languages alongside the specific techniques of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, translation in professional contexts, and the terminology management that underlies high-quality professional language work. The programme includes a sandwich year with placements at two partner universities, giving you immersive experience in both language environments that is essential for the level of fluency and cultural confidence that professional language work requires.

Work placements are integrated throughout, developing your professional experience alongside your academic and linguistic training. Heriot-Watt's strong reputation for modern languages in Scotland, reflected in consistently high student satisfaction, provides a distinctive environment for this kind of specialist training.

Graduates move into careers as professional interpreters, translators, and language specialists in international organisations, government departments, law firms, the European institutions, the private sector, and NGOs. Many also pursue professional accreditation with bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city is a …

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of l…
