Modern Languages (Italian and Persian) and Greek

Modern languages across Italian, Persian, and Greek at St Andrews is a programme that opens access to three distinct and richly different traditions of language and culture. Italian is the language of one of the world's great artistic and cultural civilisations, and students of Italian develop language and communication skills to a high level of proficiency while engaging with specialist topics in Italian literature, culture, history, politics, and film. Persian, one of the world's oldest continuously written languages, gives access to a literary tradition of extraordinary richness spanning poetry, philosophy, and history across Iran, Afghanistan, and the Persian-speaking world.

Classical or modern Greek connects you either to the ancient traditions that shaped Western thought or to the contemporary Greek-speaking world of the eastern Mediterranean.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme is delivered by one of the UK's strongest modern languages departments, with expert staff across all three language traditions. You will develop genuine linguistic proficiency in your chosen languages, combining intensive language instruction with literary, cultural, and historical study in each language area. A year abroad is integral to the programme, providing the sustained immersive experience that high-level language competence requires.
