About this course

Modern languages and mathematics is a combination that might initially appear unusual but that makes excellent sense for students who have genuine interests and abilities in both. Languages develop linguistic competency, cultural knowledge, and the capacity for critical analysis of texts across different traditions. Mathematics provides the language in which the natural sciences, economics, computing, and much of modern professional life are conducted, developing logical rigour, abstraction, and quantitative problem-solving.

Together they provide a degree of unusual breadth.

At Aberystwyth University, you will explore both the language of mathematics, which underpins much of the modern world, and your choice of modern language, from French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The mathematics strand covers pure and applied mathematics, developing your capacity for abstract reasoning alongside practical problem-solving. The modern languages strand develops language proficiency alongside cultural and literary knowledge.

You will gain skills in two genuinely distinct but complementary disciplines, and the combination is rare enough to be distinctive in the graduate market. The programme runs over four years full-time.

Graduates of modern languages and mathematics programmes pursue careers in finance, computing, data science, translation, the civil service, education, and international business. The combination of quantitative rigour and linguistic competency is valued in roles that require both analytical precision and cross-cultural communication, including roles in European institutions, multinational companies, and international financial organisations. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, languages, or related fields.
