Music and Film

Music and film are two of the most powerful art forms of the modern world, and studying them together reveals how closely they have always been entwined. From the silent era, when live piano accompaniment was inseparable from the moving image, to the multi-billion-pound recording industry and the streaming platforms that now distribute both, sound and vision shape culture in ways that reward serious academic attention. This programme at Bangor University allows you to explore the creative, technical, and critical dimensions of both disciplines simultaneously.

You will examine how music is composed, performed, and produced, studying elements of theory, history, and practice across a range of genres and traditions. Alongside this, you will engage with film as a cultural and artistic form, analysing cinematic language, narrative structure, and the relationship between soundtrack and image. The programme develops your capacity for both creative practice and critical analysis, and you will build skills in areas such as audio production, screenwriting, and cultural criticism.

This programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you extensive real-world and international experience within the degree structure. The programme is studied full-time.

Graduates of music and film programmes go into a wide range of creative industries, including music production, film and television production, sound design, arts journalism, music management, and cultural programming. The combination of technical craft and critical thinking also suits roles in arts administration, education, and digital media. Many students continue to postgraduate study in musicology, film studies, or related creative fields, or develop independent careers as practitioners in music and screen arts.
