About this course

Music at degree level is more than training in a single instrument or genre: it is the development of a complete musical identity as a producer, songwriter, composer, and performer, alongside the critical understanding of music as an art form, a cultural practice, and a commercial industry. A music degree asks you to take your creative practice seriously as both a craft and an intellectual pursuit, to understand where your work sits in relation to musical tradition and contemporary practice, and to build the professional awareness needed to sustain a career in a competitive field.

At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who want to build their academic skills before beginning the main degree. The programme develops your technical skills across production, songwriting, composition, and performance, and as you progress you will refine your musical identity through a programme that provides opportunities to perform in real settings, including a gig at a well-known London venue and a festival-style showcase. In the final year, you will have the chance to collaborate with students from film, animation, and games, reflecting the growing importance of cross-disciplinary music work in screen and interactive media.

You will also have an opportunity to gain work experience in the music industry, connecting your academic development to professional practice.

Graduates pursue careers as musicians, producers, songwriters, composers, music teachers, and professionals in music management, publishing, events, and A and R. London provides an exceptional context for music education, offering access to one of the world's most dynamic music scenes, diverse musical communities, and extensive industry networks. Many graduates develop portfolio careers that combine performance, production, and other creative work.

Postgraduate study in music, music technology, or music production is a route for those who wish to develop their practice or specialise further.

Genuinely worthwhile
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city wit…
