Music performance is a discipline that takes seriously the challenge of bringing music to life for an audience, developing both the technical mastery of an instrument or voice and the interpretive, analytical and communicative skills that distinguish a musician who can perform from one who can perform with meaning. At the University of Hull, this three-year full-time degree uses industry-standard facilities and a combination of practical projects and contextualising lectures to develop your musicianship in depth while encouraging you to engage critically with the role of music in society.

You will develop your principal instrument or voice alongside ensemble work, music history, analysis and the professional skills needed to sustain a career in music. The programme challenges you to examine the value, status and significance of music, asking not just how to play but what performance is for and how it functions in different cultural and social contexts. The final year is built around a large-scale practical project that serves as a capstone to your studies and a springboard toward your professional career, whether that is in performance, education, production or another area of the music world.

A typical entry tariff of around 104 points is expected.

Graduates from music performance degrees pursue careers as performing musicians, music teachers, workshop leaders, session musicians, arts administrators and music industry professionals. The performance training develops self-discipline, audience awareness and the ability to communicate under pressure, all of which transfer to a wide range of contexts beyond performance itself. Many graduates pursue portfolio careers that combine performance with teaching, recording or community music work, and some go on to postgraduate study or conservatoire training to develop their performance to the highest professional level.
