Music production is the craft and technology behind recorded sound. It encompasses the entire journey from initial idea to finished track: composing and arranging, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering, as well as the technical understanding of acoustics, signal flow, and the software and hardware tools that make modern music. Where performance is about what happens in the room, music production is about what gets captured, shaped, and released into the world, and the two have become increasingly intertwined as the line between studio and stage continues to blur.

At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme develops your skills across the full spectrum of contemporary music production. You will work with professional digital audio workstations, recording equipment, and production techniques, developing both technical fluency and creative confidence. The programme engages with a wide range of genres and approaches, recognising that music production is a discipline that spans electronic music, pop, hip-hop, film scoring, sound design, and many other forms.

You will also study the music industry in its current form, developing your understanding of how music is distributed, monetised, and marketed in a landscape transformed by streaming, social media, and independent release. Music production graduates pursue careers across the music and audio industries in a wide range of roles.
