Music Production with a Foundation Year
Music production is the craft and technology of creating recorded music, from the initial idea through to the finished product that listeners hear. It encompasses composition, arrangement, recording, editing, mixing and mastering, and it requires both technical facility with the tools of modern music production and genuine musical understanding. At the University of Keele this programme includes a foundation year, providing a pathway for students who want to develop the foundational knowledge and skills needed before progressing to degree-level study. The full course runs over four years full time. You will work with industry-standard equipment and software, developing hands-on production skills alongside a theoretical understanding of sound design, acoustics, music history and the business structures of the music industry.
The programme blends theoretical learning with practical studio work throughout, ensuring that you graduate with both the conceptual understanding and the technical portfolio that employers and clients expect.
You will learn to record and edit audio, design and synthesise sounds, programme and produce tracks across a range of genres, and mix and master finished recordings to professional standards. You will also develop an understanding of music business, copyright and the commercial contexts within which professional music producers operate.
Graduates from music production programmes work as music producers, recording engineers, sound designers, composer-producers, podcast and audio post-production specialists, and live sound engineers. The skills developed are also applicable to film, television, games and advertising, where demand for skilled audio professionals is consistent. Some graduates also move into music education, music technology teaching or entrepreneurial roles running their own studios or production companies.
