Music Technology

Music technology is the discipline that sits at the intersection of music and technology, concerned with how digital and electronic tools are used to create, record, produce, manipulate and distribute music and sound. It encompasses digital audio workstations, synthesis, sound design, recording engineering, music programming, acoustics, psychoacoustics and the creative and technical processes through which music is made in the contemporary industry. The field has expanded significantly as home and studio production have converged and as new genres, platforms and tools have transformed what is possible for individual creators and professional producers alike.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you international exposure to how music technology is developed and practised in a different cultural and industry context. You will develop skills in recording, mixing, mastering, synthesis, sound design, music programming, live sound and the use of industry-standard software and hardware tools, alongside a broader understanding of the music industry, music theory and the creative contexts in which music technology is applied. UWS's connections with the Scottish music industry and the programme's practical orientation prepare you for the professional environments in which music technology graduates work.

Graduates of music technology programmes go on to careers in music production, recording engineering, sound design, live sound engineering, music programming, film and television scoring and sound, game audio, music supervision, broadcast audio, music software development and music education. The combination of technical skills and musical understanding is valued across the full range of professional audio and music industry contexts. Further study at master's level in music production, sound design, music technology or a related area is available for those who want to pursue advanced specialist or research careers.
