Music at university is a discipline that encompasses the full range of ways in which human beings make, study, and think about sound. Performance and composition sit alongside musicology and analysis; the study of Western classical traditions is accompanied by engagement with popular music, world music, and contemporary sound art; and technical proficiency develops alongside critical and historical thinking. The four-year full-time Music programme at the University of Glasgow is designed around the conviction that musical study should be shaped by the student's own interests and strengths. In each year you are given a range of options in both music and other subjects, allowing you to design a degree pathway that reflects your particular creative and intellectual priorities, whether those lie in performance, composition, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, or music technology.
