Musical Theatre

Musical theatre is the art form that fuses music, lyrics, drama, and often dance into a unified live performance. It is one of the most demanding of the performing arts because it requires practitioners to be skilled in multiple disciplines simultaneously: you must be able to sing, act, and move, and to integrate these capabilities in service of a character, a scene, and a story. The genre encompasses a vast range of styles and traditions, from the Golden Age of Broadway and the West End through to contemporary immersive and devised musical theatre, and practitioners need both historical awareness and creative adaptability.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will study part-time, allowing you to develop your practice while managing other commitments. The programme structure means you can take fewer course units per week than a full-time student while still progressing through the full degree, making it a practical and accessible route for those whose circumstances call for a more flexible mode of study. You will develop as a musical theatre performer and practitioner, building technical skills in singing, acting, and movement alongside the contextual and critical knowledge that situates your practice in the broader history and theory of the form.

The programme is attentive to both performance craft and the professional realities of working in musical theatre, preparing you for the range of contexts in which the form is created and performed.

Graduates of musical theatre work as performers in professional theatre productions, touring shows, cruise lines, theme parks, and commercial entertainment venues. Roles in choreography, musical direction, community theatre, youth theatre leadership, and drama education draw on the multiple skills the degree develops. Stage management, arts administration, and casting are further directions for those whose interests extend to the production side of the industry.

Many graduates also work as independent artists, devising and producing their own work. Further study at postgraduate level in performance, musical theatre, or applied drama is available for those who wish to develop their practice further.
