Musical Theatre
Musical theatre is an art form that combines the distinct disciplines of drama, dance, and singing into a unified performance practice, telling stories that require all three to work together simultaneously and with equal technical and expressive power. It has its own tradition, canon, and set of conventions, ranging from the great Broadway and West End shows of the twentieth century through to contemporary works that push the boundaries of the form, and it demands performers who are genuinely versatile: someone who is a strong actor but a weak singer, or a powerful vocalist but a limited mover, cannot fully embody what the form requires.
At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time degree combines drama, dance, voice, and performing arts in a programme that engages with both the history of musical theatre and its contemporary possibilities. You will develop your technique in each of the three core disciplines alongside the collaborative skills needed to create work that brings them together effectively. The programme is designed for students who are passionate about storytelling through song and movement and who thrive in creative collaboration.

Graduates from musical theatre programmes pursue careers as performers on stage and screen, as well as in musical direction, choreography, teaching, arts administration, and casting. The West End, touring productions, regional theatre, cruise and holiday entertainment, and the growing field of new musical development are all natural arenas for graduates with strong technique and versatile skills. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine performance with teaching, directing, or other creative work.
