About this course

Naval architecture with ocean engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, construction, and operation of ships, submarines, offshore platforms, and other marine structures. It draws on fluid mechanics, structural engineering, thermodynamics, and control systems, applying them to vessels and structures that must function reliably in one of the most challenging environments on earth. Naval architects need to predict the stability and safety of ships, calculate their strength under load, determine their speed and propulsion requirements, and estimate how they will behave in rough seas and extreme weather conditions.

The discipline underpins a global maritime industry that carries more than ninety percent of world trade.

At the University of Strathclyde this four-year programme, which includes a year abroad, is delivered by one of the world's leading departments in naval architecture and ocean engineering. You will develop skills in hydrodynamics, structural analysis, ship design, and marine systems, learning to calculate the motions of floating structures and to estimate their reliability and safety in extreme conditions. The year abroad gives you an international perspective on a genuinely global industry.

Graduates from naval architecture and ocean engineering programmes work in shipbuilding and ship repair, offshore oil and gas, renewable marine energy, naval defence, maritime consultancy, and classification societies. The skills are also applied to the design and operation of offshore wind installations, tidal energy devices, and floating infrastructure of various kinds. With appropriate further development, graduates can work towards chartered engineer status.

Postgraduate study in naval architecture, ocean engineering, or marine technology is also available for those who wish to develop advanced technical specialism or pursue research in this field.
