About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the brain and nervous system, one of the most complex and rapidly advancing fields in biology. It asks how the nervous system is organised, how neurons communicate, how sensory information is processed, how memories are formed and how behaviour and emotion are controlled. The discipline draws on biology, chemistry, physics, psychology and computational science, and its findings have profound implications for medicine, particularly for understanding and treating neurological and psychiatric conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, depression, epilepsy and stroke.

At the University of Nottingham, this three-year programme includes a foundation year for students who need to build their scientific foundations before the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, with work placement opportunities throughout. You will develop a thorough grounding in neuroscience, from molecular and cellular mechanisms through to systems, circuits and behaviour, developing both the theoretical understanding and the laboratory and analytical skills that research in the field demands. Nottingham's research strengths in neuroscience and biomedical science provide a rich academic environment for the programme.

Neuroscience graduates pursue careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical neuroscience, biomedical science, science communication, health policy and academic research. Many pursue postgraduate study, including PhD programmes in neuroscience, pharmacology, psychology or biomedical science, which is often the route into senior research roles in academia and industry. The analytical and quantitative skills developed through the degree are also valued in data science, healthcare technology and research management roles.
