About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system in all its complexity, from the molecular mechanisms that govern how neurons communicate to the large-scale neural circuits that underlie perception, memory, decision-making and consciousness. It is one of the most rapidly advancing areas of modern science, with profound implications for our understanding of the mind and for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Combining neuroscience with a modern language adds an international dimension that is unusual and increasingly valued, equipping you to work in the global research community and in sectors where both scientific and linguistic expertise are needed.

At the University of Manchester this four-year programme includes a foundation year for eligible students, building the scientific grounding required before degree-level neuroscience begins. Across the full programme you will study the cellular and molecular neuroscience of the nervous system, sensory and motor systems, cognitive neuroscience, pharmacology and the neuroscience of disease, with substantial laboratory work throughout. The modern language component develops your proficiency in your chosen language and brings you into contact with the scientific and cultural communities of the countries where it is spoken.

A sandwich year provides professional laboratory or research experience, with further work placement activity also incorporated.

Graduates are well placed for academic research, positions in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research organisations, healthcare, science policy and science communication. The language component significantly expands your options, particularly for research careers in European or international settings, roles in multinational pharmaceutical companies, and careers at the intersection of science and public engagement. Many graduates continue to doctoral research in neuroscience or related biomedical disciplines.
