About this course

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, from the molecular mechanisms of individual neurons to the complex network activity that underlies thought, emotion, perception, and behaviour. It is one of the most rapidly advancing areas of modern science, driven by technological developments in imaging, genetics, and electrophysiology that are allowing researchers to study the brain at resolutions and scales that were not possible even a decade ago. Understanding how the brain works is not only one of the deepest questions in biology; it also has profound implications for medicine, mental health, and our understanding of what it means to be human.

This four-year full-time degree at the University of Manchester combines rigorous neuroscience training with a grounding in entrepreneurship. The programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported introduction to the scientific principles and study skills that underpin the full degree. In the neuroscience component you will explore the cellular and molecular biology of neurons and neural circuits, examine how the brain develops, and engage with contemporary research into areas such as biomedical imaging, genetic manipulation, and functional recording at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels.

Graduates pursue careers in neuroscience research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical neuroscience, healthcare management, science communication, and the growing field of neurotechnology. The entrepreneurship component also opens paths in health-tech start-ups, science policy, and innovation consultancy. Postgraduate study including doctoral research is a natural continuation for those with strong research interests.
