Norwegian and Serbian-Croatian

Norwegian and Serbian-Croatian is a joint honours programme at University College London that pairs two languages from very different parts of Europe, each with its own distinctive literary and cultural tradition. Norwegian is the primary language of Norway, carrying a literary heritage that includes Ibsen and Hamsun and a contemporary literature of considerable vitality; it is also the language of a society with a distinctive political and cultural character that repays serious study. Serbian-Croatian encompasses the closely related languages of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro, spanning a region whose history has been marked by extraordinary cultural richness and, in the twentieth century, by devastating conflict.

Studying both over four years at UCL gives you genuine linguistic proficiency in two languages and an engagement with the cultures, histories, and literatures associated with them.

You will take modules in language skills across speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, as well as in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The range of options available means you can tailor the degree to your own intellectual interests, building depth in the areas that matter most to you. The programme includes a year abroad spent in countries where both languages are spoken, giving you the immersive language experience that is essential to achieving genuine fluency and a deep understanding of both cultures.

Graduates from modern languages degrees at UCL are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, journalism, diplomacy, international organisations, academia, publishing, cultural institutions, and international business.
