Nursing - Adult with Foundation Year
Adult nursing is the branch of the nursing profession concerned with the care of people throughout the adult lifespan, from young adults to the elderly, in settings that range from acute hospital wards and intensive care units to GP surgeries, care homes, and people's own homes. Adult nurses assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate care for people experiencing a wide range of physical health conditions, from acute illness and injury to chronic conditions, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care. The role demands clinical competence, compassionate communication, professional judgment, and the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
At Birmingham City University, this programme is offered as Adult Nursing with a Foundation Year, with a January intake, making it a four-year full-time degree that starts at the beginning of the calendar year rather than in September. The January entry point provides an additional point of access for students who are ready to begin their nursing education outside the traditional autumn start. The foundation year provides a structured introductory year that develops the academic skills and scientific knowledge needed to engage successfully with the main nursing degree, making the programme accessible to students from a range of educational backgrounds.
The programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and successful graduates are eligible to register as adult nurses. You will study nursing theory and practice, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, evidence-based care, safeguarding, and professional ethics, alongside substantial clinical placement experience in NHS and other healthcare settings across the West Midlands.
