Nursing - Adult with Foundation Year
Adult Nursing is the branch of nursing focused on the care of adults across the full span of adult life, from young adulthood through to older age. Adult nurses work in some of the most demanding and consequential environments in healthcare: acute hospital wards, intensive care and high dependency units, surgical departments, emergency care, outpatient services, and community and district nursing settings. They care for people who are seriously ill, recovering from surgery, managing long-term conditions, or facing the end of life.
Nursing is both a science and a deeply human practice, requiring clinical expertise and genuine compassion in equal measure.
At Birmingham City University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need to develop their academic and scientific preparation before entering the main nursing degree. The programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and leads to registration as an adult nurse on the NMC register. Substantial clinical placement time in NHS settings is built into the programme from early on, and you will develop your skills in real healthcare environments under the supervision of experienced practitioners.
The academic component covers anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, and the professional and ethical dimensions of nursing care.
Adult Nursing graduates register with the NMC and begin their careers as newly qualified nurses, typically in NHS hospitals or community settings.
