Nursing - Mental Health

Mental health nursing is the field of nursing practice dedicated to working with people experiencing mental illness, psychological distress, and the complex social circumstances that both cause and result from poor mental health. Mental health nurses work across inpatient wards, community teams, crisis services, forensic settings, and primary care, using therapeutic relationships, clinical assessment, and evidence-based interventions to support recovery and promote wellbeing. The profession requires both clinical knowledge and the human qualities of empathy, resilience, and the ability to form genuine therapeutic connections with people in acute distress.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year, full-time degree provides the clinical skills and experience needed to become a professional practitioner in mental health nursing. The course is NMC approved and is subject to review for 2026, after which there may be some changes in structure and delivery, while maintaining its professional approval. You will develop your understanding of mental health conditions, therapeutic interventions, pharmacology, risk assessment, safeguarding, and the legal and ethical frameworks governing mental health care.

Clinical placement experience across a range of settings is integrated throughout the programme, ensuring that academic learning is grounded in real professional practice from an early stage.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and work as mental health nurses across the NHS, independent sector, and voluntary organisations. Many specialise over time in areas such as eating disorders, psychosis, addiction, dementia, or forensic mental health. Advanced practice routes, nurse prescribing, and clinical leadership roles are available through postgraduate study and continuing professional development.
