Dual-field nursing programmes are an increasingly valued route into the profession, producing graduates who can work across two of nursing's core fields and respond flexibly to the complex needs of patients whose physical and mental health are deeply interconnected. Adult nursing addresses the care of adults across the full range of physical health conditions, while mental health nursing focuses on supporting people experiencing mental illness, psychological distress and the complex needs that often accompany long-term mental health conditions. The two fields share a commitment to person-centred care and evidence-based practice, and graduates qualified in both are well placed to meet needs that often fall between traditional professional boundaries.
At Anglia Ruskin University this programme focuses on person-centred care throughout, building fundamental nursing skills alongside specialist knowledge in both adult and mental health nursing. You will develop the clinical competence, professional judgement and interpersonal skills needed to care for patients across both fields, gaining confidence through clinical placements in a range of settings. The programme runs full time over three years and equips you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in both adult and mental health nursing on completion.
Your learning will combine academic study of the underpinning sciences, including physiology, pharmacology and psychology, with the applied clinical and communication skills that define professional nursing practice. You will develop the reflective practice and ethical reasoning that are central to professional nursing identity, and you will engage with the organisational and policy contexts within which nurses work.
Graduates qualify as dual registered nurses and work across a wide range of NHS and independent healthcare settings. Career progression can lead to specialist practice, advanced clinical roles, team leadership, education or nursing research. Postgraduate training options include advanced clinical practice, specialist practitioner qualifications and nurse prescribing.
