Nursing Adult and Mental Health
Dual-registration nursing at master's level is an ambitious and increasingly relevant pathway, reflecting the reality that many clinical settings require nurses to hold competencies across more than one field of practice. This programme combines adult nursing with mental health nursing, recognising that physical and psychological health are inseparable, that patients in acute wards frequently have mental health needs, and that those in mental health services often have complex physical conditions. At the University of Southampton you will study a four-year full-time MNurs programme that develops the clinical skills and conceptual frameworks needed to practise compassionately and effectively in both fields. You will build a thorough understanding of adult physiology, pathophysiology and the management of acute and long-term conditions, alongside detailed study of mental health, psychological theory, therapeutic relationships and the legal and ethical dimensions of mental health care. The programme is evidence-based throughout, and you will develop the ability to critically appraise research and apply it to your practice.

On completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in both adult and mental health nursing, a dual registration that significantly broadens your employability and your clinical versatility. Graduates work in NHS trusts, community health services, forensic settings, crisis teams, rehabilitation services and a wide range of specialist roles. The combination of physical and psychological expertise is particularly valued in areas such as liaison psychiatry, older adult care, learning disability services and integrated community teams.
