Nursing (Adult) Autumn Intake
Adult nursing is the largest field within nursing practice and one of the most demanding and rewarding careers in healthcare. Registered adult nurses assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care for adults across the full spectrum of health conditions, from acute illness and surgery to long-term conditions and end-of-life care, working across hospital wards, community settings, outpatient clinics and specialist units. The role requires clinical knowledge and practical skill, but equally requires the ability to communicate with patients and families, to exercise professional judgement and to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Cardiff University's three-year full-time nursing programme leading to adult registration is built around a combination of academic study and substantial supervised clinical practice, with significant time spent on placement in NHS hospitals and community settings in Wales. You will develop knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and the pathophysiology of common conditions alongside the clinical skills that registered nursing demands, including assessment, medicines management, wound care and person-centred care planning. The autumn intake allows students to begin the programme at a point in the academic year that suits NHS clinical placement scheduling.
Throughout the degree you will develop the professional values, ethical frameworks and reflective practice habits that underpin nursing as a regulated profession.
Nursing demands resilience, compassion and the ability to remain focused and effective in environments that are often pressured and emotionally demanding. The degree develops these qualities alongside technical competence, producing graduates who are ready to register and practise independently.
Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and are eligible to work across NHS and independent sector healthcare settings throughout the UK and, with appropriate recognition, internationally. Career progression routes include specialist clinical practice, advanced nurse practitioner roles, nursing management, education, research and roles in healthcare policy and leadership.
