Adult nursing is the branch of nursing that provides care for people from young adulthood through old age across the full spectrum of health conditions, from acute medical and surgical illness to long-term conditions, mental health challenges and end-of-life care. Adult nurses are the largest group of registered nurses in the UK, working in hospitals, community settings, general practices, care homes and specialist services, and they are central to the delivery of healthcare in the NHS and beyond. At the University of Stirling, this three-year full-time degree is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and has award-winning credentials, preparing you for registration and a career making a genuine difference to people's lives.

A year abroad is available within the programme structure.

You will develop the clinical knowledge, practical skills and professional values needed to care effectively for adult patients across a wide range of presentations. The curriculum covers anatomy, physiology and pharmacology alongside the clinical practice content of assessment, care planning, medicines management, safeguarding and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern nursing. Clinical placements in NHS settings across the Stirling region run throughout the three years, developing your clinical competence progressively alongside your academic knowledge.

A typical entry tariff of around 136 points is expected.

Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as adult nurses and enter NHS employment across medical, surgical, emergency and community settings. Career development is extensive, with routes into specialist nursing in areas such as oncology, cardiology, critical care, community nursing and district nursing, as well as into nursing leadership, education and advanced practice. The persistent need for adult nurses across the NHS means that graduates are typically employed promptly, and the profession offers long-term career stability alongside the personal satisfaction of clinical work.
