Nursing Adult

Adult nursing is a profession that places you at the most significant moments of other people's lives. Nurses assess patients, administer treatments, manage complex care needs, provide comfort and advocacy, and work as part of multidisciplinary teams in environments where decisions must be made quickly and carefully. The intellectual and emotional demands of the role are real, and the rewards are equally genuine: few professions offer a comparable combination of meaningful human connection and clinical responsibility.

At Edinburgh Napier University this three-year full-time programme is taught in a friendly and supportive environment by experienced nurse educators. The programme benefits from a state-of-the-art Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre where you will practise clinical procedures and scenarios in a safe setting before working with real patients. Work placements make up half of the course content, and you will undertake these across the Lothian and Borders area, gaining experience in both hospital and community settings.

This balance of simulation-based preparation and real clinical exposure is central to how Napier prepares its nurses.

You will develop detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology alongside the professional and ethical frameworks that govern nursing in the UK. Communication, compassionate care, clinical decision-making and the ability to work effectively under pressure are developed throughout. The programme is designed to lead to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified adult nurse.

Registered adult nurses work across NHS Scotland and the wider UK, in acute hospital settings, community nursing teams, care homes, GP practices, schools and occupational health. There are clear pathways to specialist practice, including critical care, oncology, district nursing, practice nursing and advanced clinical roles. Many nurses pursue postgraduate study in clinical specialisms, nursing leadership or advanced practice, and academic nursing careers are also a recognised route for those drawn to research and education.
