Nursing
Adult nursing is the largest field of the nursing profession, concerned with the assessment, care and treatment of adult patients across the full range of clinical settings and health conditions. Nurses are at the front line of healthcare, working alongside doctors, allied health professionals and other colleagues to support patients through illness, recovery, long-term conditions and end-of-life care. The role demands clinical knowledge, practical skill, emotional resilience and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families and professional colleagues in complex and often pressured circumstances.
At Dundee, this three-year full-time programme is based in Tayside, with placements across the NHS Tayside footprint that encompasses Dundee, Perth and Angus. You will develop the ability to work in a wide range of challenging healthcare settings, supporting patients and carers through periods of acute illness, rehabilitation and ongoing health management. The programme prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, combining academic study of nursing science with substantial clinical placement time from early in your training.
You will study anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and the evidence base for nursing care, alongside the professional, ethical and legal frameworks that govern nursing practice in Scotland. You will develop your communication, leadership and teamwork skills in clinical contexts, learning to assess patients, plan care, deliver interventions and evaluate outcomes under the supervision of experienced nurses.
On graduating and achieving NMC registration, you are qualified to work as a registered adult nurse across NHS and independent healthcare settings in Scotland and the wider UK. Many nurses develop specialist interests in areas such as critical care, cancer nursing, community nursing or district nursing. Advanced practice, education and leadership roles are longer-term career directions, and postgraduate study supports further professional development.
