Nursing

Adult nursing is the branch of the nursing profession concerned with the care of adults across the full lifespan, from young adults through to older people, in a wide range of clinical and community settings. Adult nurses work in hospitals, primary care, the community, care homes, rehabilitation settings and many specialist environments, providing direct patient care, coordinating with other health professionals and supporting patients and their families through illness, recovery and, sometimes, end of life. The degree at the University of Brighton prepares you for this demanding and essential professional role through three years of integrated academic and clinical learning.

Studying full-time, you will cover human biology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing assessment and clinical decision-making, medicines management, evidence-based practice, public health, leadership and the ethical and legal frameworks of nursing. Clinical placements form a substantial part of the programme, placing you in real healthcare settings to develop your clinical skills under the supervision of registered nurses. You will develop practical competency in the fundamental skills of nursing, including patient assessment, medication administration, wound care, communication and the management of clinical risk, alongside the theoretical understanding that good clinical practice requires.

Graduation from an NMC-approved nursing degree leads to registration as a qualified adult nurse, enabling you to practise in the UK. Registered nurses work across a broad range of settings and can develop careers in specialisms such as critical care, oncology, cardiology, emergency medicine, community nursing and many others. Senior clinical, management, education and research roles are all available to nurses who develop their practice and qualifications over time, and the profession offers both professional development and genuine social significance.
