Nursing (Blended Learning) Mental Health

Mental health nursing is a branch of the nursing profession dedicated to supporting people experiencing a wide range of psychological and psychiatric conditions, from depression and anxiety to psychosis, personality disorders, and substance misuse. Mental health nurses build therapeutic relationships with people in acute distress and with those managing long-term conditions, working in inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis services, and specialist units. The role demands both rigorous clinical knowledge and genuine interpersonal skill, requiring practitioners who can listen carefully, exercise sound professional judgment, and work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme is delivered using a blended learning approach, combining online learning with face-to-face teaching and clinical placement experience. Blended learning allows for a flexible approach to the taught elements of the programme, which can be beneficial for students who need to manage a range of commitments alongside their studies, while still providing the in-person contact and supervised clinical experience that are essential for nursing training. The programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and prepares you for registration as a Registered Nurse in the mental health field.

You will study the foundations of mental health care, nursing theory and practice, pharmacology, the legal and ethical framework governing mental health provision including the Mental Health Act, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches to a range of conditions. Clinical placements across a range of mental health settings in the Yorkshire and Humber region provide the practical experience and professional development that are central to the degree.

Qualified mental health nurses work across the NHS and in private and voluntary sector mental health services. Career development opportunities are extensive, with specialist roles in areas such as forensic mental health, eating disorders, substance misuse, liaison psychiatry, and talking therapies. Leadership, management, education, and advanced clinical practice are all available pathways for experienced practitioners.
