About this course

Children's nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding branches of the profession. It requires a distinct set of competencies: an ability to build trust with young patients who may be frightened or unable to communicate clearly, to work closely with families, and to understand how illness and treatment affect children differently at every stage of development, from premature infants to teenagers approaching adulthood. Child nurses operate in hospitals, community settings, schools and specialist centres, adapting their approach to a wide variety of clinical situations.

At the University of York you will explore the healthcare needs of children across diverse environments, developing both the clinical knowledge and the interpersonal skills that effective children's nursing demands. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year as a core structural feature, giving you extended hands-on experience in real clinical settings throughout your studies. A year abroad further broadens your perspective on how children's health is understood and managed in different healthcare systems.

Work placement is integral to the programme, and you will study child development, family-centred care, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, and the management of acute and long-term conditions. Assessment throughout the programme builds your ability to make safe, evidence-informed decisions. With a typical tariff of 152, the programme attracts students who are committed to a career centred on making a tangible difference to children's lives.

Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council on completion qualifies you to practise as a registered children's nurse. Career pathways span neonatal intensive care, paediatric oncology, community children's nursing, school nursing, and management or specialist roles. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in areas such as advanced clinical practice, public health or healthcare leadership.

Children's nursing sits within a workforce that is consistently in demand, and the breadth of experience gained through York's placement-rich programme positions you well for a long and varied career.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you sha…
