About this course

Mental health nursing sits at the heart of one of the most pressing challenges in modern healthcare. As understanding of psychological wellbeing has deepened and demand for mental health services has grown, the need for skilled, compassionate nurses who can work effectively across complex and often challenging environments has never been greater. Mental health nurses work with people across the full spectrum of conditions, from anxiety and depression to psychosis and personality disorders, and they do so in settings ranging from acute inpatient wards to community teams, schools and prisons.

This three-year full-time programme at the University of Winchester places the needs of patients and their families at its centre. You will develop the clinical knowledge and practical skills needed to assess, plan and deliver nursing care across a range of mental health settings, while also building the capacity for reflective practice and autonomous decision-making that characterises effective professional nursing. The course is designed to prepare you to work within an ever-changing health and social care landscape, equipping you to adapt to new evidence, evolving service models and the shifting needs of the people you care for.

You will be supported by an experienced academic and clinical team as you progress towards becoming a compassionate and competent registered nurse.

Mental health nursing leads directly to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is required to practise as a nurse in the UK. Graduates work in NHS trusts, independent sector providers, voluntary organisations and community mental health teams. Many go on to specialise further in areas such as forensic mental health, child and adolescent mental health services, eating disorders or substance misuse, often supported by continuing professional development and postgraduate qualifications.

Leadership and management roles, advanced clinical practice and nursing research are all pathways open to experienced mental health nurses, and the profession offers a genuinely varied and deeply rewarding career.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transpo…
