Mental health nursing is one of the most demanding and rewarding branches of the nursing profession. Mental health nurses work with people experiencing conditions including depression, anxiety, psychosis, personality disorders, and eating disorders, across a wide range of settings including inpatient wards, community teams, crisis services, and primary care. The role requires both clinical knowledge and exceptional interpersonal skills: the ability to form therapeutic relationships with people who may be frightened, distressed, or distrustful is at the heart of what mental health nurses do.

At Aston University in Birmingham, this three-year full-time programme leads to registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, specifically in the mental health field. The programme combines academic study with substantial practice placements in mental health settings, which is the model required by the NMC for all pre-registration nursing programmes. The academic content covers the theory and science underpinning mental health nursing, including psychopharmacology, psychological therapies, the legal and ethical frameworks governing mental health care, and the social determinants of mental health.

You will develop skills in assessment, care planning, risk management, medication management, and therapeutic communication.
