About this course

Adult nursing sits at the heart of healthcare, combining clinical knowledge and practical skill with the kind of sustained human attention that makes a real difference to patients at their most vulnerable. Nurses are the largest professional group in the NHS and arguably the most continuously present, coordinating care, monitoring change and acting as the consistent point of contact for patients and families navigating illness, treatment and recovery. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Leicester is distinctive in its focus on leadership alongside clinical formation, preparing you not only to be a competent and compassionate nurse but to take on the responsibilities that shape how care is organised and delivered.

You will develop the core skills of adult nursing through a combination of academic study and substantial clinical placement, learning to assess patients, plan and deliver care, administer medicines safely and communicate effectively across the full range of healthcare settings. Alongside this clinical foundation, the programme embeds an understanding of how effective and efficient leadership is crucial to the smooth running of healthcare. You will study how teams function, how services are managed and improved, and how nurses at every level can influence the quality and safety of care through their professional conduct and engagement with organisational culture.

The four-year duration gives you time to develop depth and confidence in both the clinical and professional leadership dimensions of the programme. By the point of qualification, you will be equipped to register as an adult nurse and to step into roles that carry genuine responsibility from early in your career. Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and enter a profession with strong demand across NHS trusts, independent hospitals, community health services and care organisations.

Leadership-focused graduates are particularly well positioned to progress into ward management, specialist nursing, advanced clinical practice and service improvement roles, and further study at postgraduate level opens pathways into nurse education, research and consultancy.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transpo…
