Optometry

Optometry is the healthcare profession responsible for examining eyes, detecting and managing visual disorders, and prescribing optical and therapeutic interventions. Optometrists are primary eyecare practitioners, often the first clinician a patient sees when their vision changes or their eyes are unwell. At Teesside University this four-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a qualified optometrist. You will begin by studying the anatomy and pathophysiology relevant to optometric practice, examining the structures and functions of the eye and the broader visual system, and understanding how diseases disrupt normal visual function. As you progress through the degree you will develop clinical skills in refraction, contact lens fitting, binocular vision assessment, and the detection and referral of eye disease.
