Optometry

Optometry is the healthcare profession concerned with examining, diagnosing and managing conditions affecting vision and the eye. Optometrists assess visual function, identify refractive errors such as short-sightedness and astigmatism, detect eye diseases and systemic conditions that manifest in the eye, and prescribe and supply optical corrections including spectacles and contact lenses. The profession sits at the boundary of healthcare and optics, requiring scientific knowledge of how the eye works alongside the clinical skills needed to assess patients and make sound professional decisions.

At the University of Bradford, this four-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as an optometrist. You will study the anatomy and physiology of the visual system, optics and optical instrumentation, pharmacology, ocular disease and the principles of clinical examination. Teaching methods across the programme are varied, including lectures, seminars, practical sessions and clinical supervision, with an increasing emphasis on student-centred approaches to learning as you progress.

Optometry graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the General Optical Council following successful completion of a pre-registration year in supervised clinical practice.
