Optometry

Optometry is the primary eye care profession, concerned with the examination, diagnosis, and management of conditions affecting vision and the eye. Optometrists assess visual function, detect ocular and systemic disease, prescribe optical correction, and manage a growing range of conditions that would previously have required a hospital appointment. As primary care becomes more integrated and eye health services are expanded beyond the hospital setting, optometry has become an increasingly demanding and clinically sophisticated profession.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time degree uses a distinctive case-based learning approach, studying themed patient cases in an active learning environment that integrates scientific understanding, clinical skills, and professional development throughout. You will engage in facilitated group activities that emphasise enquiry, discussion, and the development of critical thinking and communication skills alongside the technical knowledge of optics, ocular anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and clinical methods that optometric practice requires. Graduation from an approved optometry programme, followed by a pre-registration year in supervised practice, leads to eligibility for registration with the General Optical Council as a qualified optometrist.
