Paramedic Science

Paramedic science is the clinical discipline that trains practitioners to provide emergency and urgent medical care outside hospital, responding to a wide range of life-threatening and serious medical emergencies across diverse environments and settings. Paramedics are highly skilled clinicians who combine expert medical knowledge with the critical decision-making required to assess, treat, and transport patients safely when conditions are often unpredictable and support resources limited. At Glasgow Caledonian University, this three-year full-time programme leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a qualified paramedic. The programme is built around a combination of academic study in physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, and clinical assessment alongside extensive practical and clinical placement in ambulance and pre-hospital settings, where you develop your skills in real emergency situations under supervision. You will develop the ability to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective care in fast-changing environments, building the clinical skills, professional judgement, and communication capabilities that the paramedic role requires.

The profession offers clear pathways for specialisation and advanced practice, and many paramedics go on to postgraduate study in pre-hospital care, critical care, or paramedic education.
