Paramedic Science

Paramedic science prepares you for one of the most demanding and rewarding roles in healthcare: the assessment, treatment, and management of patients in pre-hospital and emergency settings. Paramedics are autonomous practitioners who must make rapid clinical judgements, often in challenging and unpredictable environments, and the profession requires a combination of scientific knowledge, technical skill, empathy, and the capacity to remain calm and decisive under pressure. Paramedic science degrees train you for this complexity, combining rigorous academic study with extensive clinical placement experience.

At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year full-time degree places practice experience at the heart of the programme. Each year you will undertake 750 hours of placement learning, spending around half of your time in supervised clinical practice across ambulance control, GP surgeries, charities, and hospitals. This substantial exposure to real patient care is central to your development as a paramedic, building the clinical skills, professional judgement, and situational awareness that classroom study alone cannot provide.

Across your academic studies, you will develop a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, patient assessment, and the evidence base that guides paramedic practice.

Graduates from paramedic science programmes are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and work as paramedics in NHS ambulance services, private providers, event medical services, and primary care. Career progression routes include advanced clinical practitioner, critical care paramedic, emergency care practitioner, and management roles within the ambulance service. Many paramedics also develop specialist expertise in areas such as emergency medicine, mental health crisis response, or community paramedicine.

Postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice or related areas is available for those who want to extend their clinical expertise or move into education and research.
