Paramedic Science

Paramedic science is the clinical discipline concerned with the assessment, treatment, and transport of patients in emergency and urgent care settings outside the hospital environment. Paramedics work at the frontline of healthcare, responding to an enormous range of situations from minor injuries and acute medical episodes to major trauma, cardiac arrest, and life-threatening emergencies. The role requires clinical judgement under pressure, strong interpersonal skills, and the physical and psychological resilience to perform effectively in unpredictable and often demanding circumstances.

Paramedicine has become increasingly autonomous and clinically sophisticated over recent decades, and today's paramedics are highly trained healthcare professionals capable of delivering advanced interventions in the field.

At the University of Lincoln, this three-year, full-time degree leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a paramedic. You will study anatomy and physiology, clinical assessment, pharmacology, trauma management, and the emergency care of patients across the full range of medical and surgical conditions. Theory and practice are integrated throughout, with significant clinical placement time in ambulance services and other urgent and emergency care settings, where you will develop your skills under professional supervision.

The degree prepares you to work in a rapidly evolving profession that is taking on an expanding clinical role in the wider healthcare system.

Graduates register with the HCPC and work as paramedics in ambulance services, urgent treatment centres, major event medicine, primary care, and increasingly as advanced clinical practitioners in the community. The profession offers routes into specialisation in areas such as critical care, air ambulance, or advanced clinical practice, and many paramedics go on to postgraduate study to develop specialist roles. The clinical reasoning and emergency management skills you develop are also valued in related careers in nursing, medicine, and healthcare management.
