About this course

Pharmaceutical science is the discipline that applies chemistry, biology, and technology to the discovery, development, and manufacture of medicines. It is concerned with understanding how drug molecules interact with biological systems, how they can be formulated for safe and effective delivery to patients, and how they are tested, regulated, and brought to market through the complex processes of the pharmaceutical industry. The discipline also engages with the business and regulatory contexts in which drug development occurs, recognising that scientific excellence must be matched by commercial and regulatory understanding if new medicines are to reach the patients who need them.

At the University of Keele, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which makes the programme accessible to students who have strong potential but whose scientific background at A level needs strengthening before the full degree begins. A typical entry tariff of 72 points reflects the foundation year entry standard and the university's commitment to widening access to science education. Throughout the programme, you will develop your understanding of the full range of sciences underpinning pharmaceutical discovery and development, including organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, and pharmaceutical formulation.

You will also engage with the global legal and regulatory requirements of the industry, understanding how medicines are approved and monitored, and with the business dimensions of drug development, including the commercial processes that determine which scientific discoveries are translated into marketed products.

Keele has particular strengths in the pharmaceutical and life sciences, and the programme benefits from an integrated curriculum designed to develop graduates who are both scientifically capable and commercially aware.

Graduates work in pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations, regulatory agencies, clinical trials management, quality assurance, and biotech. Many continue to postgraduate study or PhD research, while others move directly into industry roles in drug discovery, formulation, or regulatory affairs.
