Pharmacy
Pharmacy is the health profession concerned with the science of medicines: how they work, how they are made, how they are used safely and how pharmacists contribute to patient care across the full range of health settings. Pharmacists are the experts on medicines within the healthcare team, advising prescribers, counselling patients, monitoring drug interactions and reactions, and increasingly taking on clinical roles that extend well beyond the dispensing counter. The profession is growing in responsibility and clinical scope, and the pharmacist's role in keeping people safe and preventing harm connected to medication has never been more important.
At King's College London you will train for registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council across a four-year full-time MPharm programme, developing the scientific and clinical knowledge needed to practise as a pharmacist in the UK. You will study pharmaceutical sciences, including pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry and pharmacokinetics, alongside the clinical and professional dimensions of pharmacy practice. You will engage with medicines law, professional ethics, patient communication and the health system contexts within which pharmacists work, and you will undertake substantial clinical placements in community pharmacies, hospitals and other healthcare settings where you practise under professional supervision.
You will develop both scientific understanding and clinical competence, the ability to counsel patients effectively, and the professional judgement to make sound decisions about medicines in complex clinical situations. King's clinical partnerships and London location provide an unusually rich professional training environment.
Graduates complete a one-year pre-registration foundation training year before registering with the General Pharmaceutical Council, and work across community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, general practice, academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Postgraduate study in clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences or independent prescribing is available for those seeking specialist expertise.
