About this course

Pharmacy is the health profession responsible for the preparation, dispensing, and appropriate use of medicines. Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who work at the interface between patients and medicines, ensuring that drugs are used safely and effectively, advising on interactions and side effects, and contributing to the management of long-term health conditions. At the Medway School of Pharmacy, a joint venture between the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich, the MPharm Pharmacy is a four-year full-time programme that prepares graduates for registration and practice as pharmacists.

The degree integrates the scientific and clinical foundations of pharmacy with professional practice training. You will study pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and the pharmaceutical sciences that underpin how drugs are designed, manufactured, and delivered to the body. Clinical pharmacy content develops your understanding of how medicines are used in practice: therapeutic drug monitoring, the management of specific disease states, prescribing principles, and the complex clinical decisions that pharmacists contribute to in hospital and community settings.

Patient-facing skills are developed throughout the programme, as pharmacy is a profession in which communication, empathy, and professional judgment are as important as scientific knowledge. As the current description notes, you will learn about patient care by studying both basic and applied science and clinical and professional practice.

Completion of an accredited MPharm degree and a year of pre-registration training leads to eligibility for registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council, which is the gateway to practice as a pharmacist in the UK. Pharmacists work in community pharmacies, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, primary care, academia, and regulatory bodies. Hospital pharmacy and clinical pharmacy roles within the NHS are among the most directly patient-facing career paths, while the pharmaceutical industry offers roles in drug development, regulatory affairs, medical information, and clinical research.

Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in clinical pharmacy, pharmacology, or specialist areas of pharmaceutical science. The four-year programme at Medway provides a thorough and professionally oriented preparation for a career in one of the most trusted health professions.

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: anatomy teaching here is particularly strong β€” full dissection experience. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local …

Worth it overall
Would I choose it again? Probably yes, with caveats. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” loc…
