Pharmacy is the science and practice of medicines, concerned with how drugs are discovered, developed, manufactured, dispensed and used to treat illness and maintain health. Pharmacists occupy a critical position in the healthcare system, translating the complex science of pharmacology and pharmaceutical chemistry into safe, effective care for patients. The profession has evolved significantly in recent decades, with pharmacists increasingly involved in clinical decision-making, medicines optimisation and direct patient consultation alongside their traditional dispensing and compounding roles.
At Robert Gordon University, the four-year Master of Pharmacy degree is designed to produce effective practitioners grounded in sound scientific principles, with the knowledge and skills to deliver excellent pharmaceutical care. The programme takes a student-centred approach, developing in you the habits of a lifelong learner and reflective practitioner, qualities that are essential in a profession where pharmacological knowledge, clinical guidelines and patient populations evolve continuously. You will study the pharmaceutical sciences in depth, including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and clinical pharmacy, and develop the clinical and communication skills needed to work effectively with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals.

Qualified pharmacists in the UK must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, and the MPharm is the primary qualifying degree. Pharmacists work in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, general practice and primary care networks, and a growing range of specialist clinical settings. Many pharmacists develop advanced expertise in areas such as oncology, infectious disease, mental health, care of older people or medicines safety.
Careers in the pharmaceutical industry, in regulatory affairs, medical information and clinical research, are also well-established routes for pharmacists who wish to move into commercial or scientific roles.
