Pharmacy
Pharmacy is the science and practice of understanding, preparing, dispensing and monitoring medicines to optimise health outcomes. Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who apply their knowledge of drug chemistry, pharmacology and therapeutics to support patients and work alongside doctors, nurses and other clinicians in ensuring that medicines are used safely and effectively. The profession is evolving rapidly, with pharmacists taking on increasingly direct clinical roles in hospitals, general practice and community settings.
At the University of East Anglia, this four-year Master of Pharmacy programme is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council, the professional and regulatory body for pharmacy in Great Britain. From the very beginning of the programme you will engage with patients and healthcare practitioners through placements and simulations, developing the clinical communication and professional skills that the role demands alongside scientific knowledge. The programme is designed to maximise your potential in a supportive and active learning environment that takes seriously the connection between academic understanding and clinical competence.
You will study pharmaceutical sciences including chemistry, pharmacology, physiology and microbiology, the science of how drugs are formulated and delivered, the pharmacokinetics of how drugs move through the body, and the clinical application of drug therapy to major disease areas. Patient communication, ethics, law, public health and the organisation of healthcare are also integral to the programme.
On qualifying and registering with the General Pharmaceutical Council, you will be eligible to work as a pharmacist in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, general practice, industry, research and regulatory affairs. Career development can lead to specialist clinical, academic or managerial roles, and pharmacists have clear pathways into advanced and consultant practice. Postgraduate study and continuing professional development are expected features of a professional pharmacy career.
