Pharmacy

Pharmacy is a science-based healthcare profession concerned with the safe, effective and rational use of medicines. Pharmacists are experts in how drugs work, how they are formulated and delivered, how they interact with the body and with each other, and how they should be prescribed, dispensed and monitored for patients across all care settings. The profession plays an increasingly central clinical role in the NHS, and pharmacists now work as independent prescribers and in specialist clinical roles as well as in traditional dispensing and community practice.

The University of Bath offers this four-year full-time Master of Pharmacy degree, delivered at the University of Plymouth campus. The MPharm is the degree required for registration as a pharmacist in the UK, and its four-year structure reflects the depth and breadth of the scientific and clinical knowledge the profession demands. You will study pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutics and the clinical sciences alongside communication, law, ethics and the practical skills that professional pharmacy practice requires.

The programme includes substantial practice experience in community, hospital and other healthcare settings, developing your clinical competence and professional confidence before you graduate. Pharmacy trains systematic scientific thinking, meticulous attention to detail, clear and empathetic communication with patients and colleagues, and the ability to make sound clinical judgements under pressure.

After completing the MPharm and a further year of foundation training, graduates register with the General Pharmaceutical Council as pharmacists. Career routes include community pharmacy, hospital and clinical pharmacy, primary care, the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory agencies, academia and international health organisations. The profession offers a well-defined route to advanced clinical practice and specialist roles.
