Pharmacy

Pharmacy is the science and art of medicines: their design, formulation, testing, dispensing, and safe clinical use in patients. Pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals available to the public, and their expanding clinical role in the NHS means they increasingly make decisions that were once the preserve of medical practitioners. The MPharm degree is the professional qualification that leads to registration, and it requires a rigorous combination of pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, and patient-centred communication skills.

At the University of Portsmouth, the MPharm (Hons) gives you insight into the pharmaceutical advances of the future while teaching you to use modern drug technology in current clinical practice. You will study drug design and formulation, pharmacology, therapeutics, clinical pharmacy skills, and the regulatory and legal frameworks governing medicines, developing both the scientific understanding and the professional competencies that a pharmacist needs. The programme includes a year abroad, offering a distinctive international perspective on pharmaceutical practice.

It runs over four years full-time.

Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council follows successful completion of the degree and a pre-registration training year. Pharmacists work in community pharmacy, NHS hospitals, general practice, the pharmaceutical industry, academic research, regulatory bodies, and other settings. The clinical and scientific rigour of the pharmacy degree also prepares graduates for postgraduate specialisation in areas such as clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical science, and drug regulation, and for leadership roles in healthcare management.
