Pharmacy with a Preparatory Year

Pharmacy is the healthcare profession concerned with the preparation, dispensing, and optimal use of medicines. At the University of East Anglia, the five-year MPharm with a Preparatory Year is a programme specifically designed for students who have the potential and motivation for pharmacy but do not yet meet the entry requirements for direct entry onto the standard four-year MPharm. The preparatory year builds the scientific and mathematical foundations needed for degree-level pharmacy study, before you move into the four-year integrated Master's programme that is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council. This five-year route to a GPhC-accredited qualification represents a genuine pathway into the pharmacy profession for students who might otherwise be excluded from it.

The main MPharm programme develops your knowledge across pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, clinical pharmacy practice, medicines management, and the legal and ethical framework of pharmacy. Substantial clinical placement experience is integral to the course, preparing you for professional registration.

Registered pharmacists work in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, primary care, industry, regulatory roles, and academia. The profession offers strong graduate employment, competitive remuneration, and clear career progression through specialist and advanced practice roles. Postgraduate study and clinical training support progression into consultant pharmacist and leadership positions.
